<itunes:summary>Look to the Defunktion Audio Player (on the right) and click play to check out some new music, then read on to find out more about what your ears are loving.Sweden seems to be quickly redefining its status as a purveyor of fine music - not content with proffering quality Chip Music and Metal,  there are bands and DJs spanning every genre emerging on to the global scene at an astounding rate. It's no surprise then that The Donk Boys hail from that part of the globe, Malmö - southern Sweden - to be specific. The boys have been collaborating since October last year, having found previous success solo. Martin Abrahamsson, aka Bauri, has released a deluge of tracks over the past decade or so and been featured on labels such as City Centre Offices and, more recently, Expanding Records. Thomas Jaldemark had his inaugural release on net label Thinner and, earlier this year, was featured on Norway-based techno label Lordag. The music Thomas and Martin make as The Donk Boys is stripped-back, spiced occasionally with freakish sounds and utterly accomplished: both boys have been busy and both boys certainly know their techno. It's almost painful not to groove along, their tunes are chunks of pure electronic chocolate - your brain unwrapping the glistening packaging before your body devours the moreish contents. It's that damn yummy. This is the beginning of something really good then - the live shows are causing a major stir over in Sweden and they have forthcoming releases on a couple of labels, including Kreatur Musik. It seems that The Donk Boys don't need too much to keep them happy either, "Our plan is to do some more live shows, release a bunch of kick ass records and drink some beer ." So if you enjoy the live set on Defunktion, contribute to making The Donk Boys happy - all you have to do is catch their live show, listen to their records and buy them a beer.

<itunes:summary>The title says it all. Artist Cosimo Cavallaro has recently managed the simple task of pissing off the Catholic Church. Simple because it's really not too difficult to create offensive art, the real skill is in creating something that actually has some semblance of aesthetic appeal past the initial frisson of excitement one feels when viewing something that's going to rile religious (or other) authorities. It's the medium in particular of Cavallaro's piece that has drawn our attention - chocolate. This is nothing new in terms of artistic practice and Cavallaro himself has indeed experimented with food-stuffs as medium before: his cheese series featured works such as a Cheese Boot, Cheese Chair and a room covered in cheese, entitled rather cunningly, Cheese Room. Cavallaro tends to take things to extremes though, with his cheese series he ended up creating Cheese House.Opening soon at LAB in New York, My Sweet Lord is a 1.8 metre suspended sculpture of Jesus in his traditional cross-pose. This, of course, is usual Church-based fare - you can find a depiction of a spread-armed Jesus at just about any Cathedral or Church around the world - except for the fact that Cavallaro's is made entirely of chocolate. So, naturally, the Catholics are angry, speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson for the Catholic League said that the sculpture is, "... one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever."And consider the fact that Cavallaro is of Italian parentage! It just makes the whole notion of giant choco-effigys of JC so much more delicious for us and potentially harder to swallow for the Catholic Church. So, is the Catholic League being a tad over-sensitive? Could this really be one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever. A Chocolate Christ at a small (but no less influential) gallery in New York? I don't remember Tom Waits having so much trouble with his song of immaculate confection. It seems that as soon as Cavallaro gave visual form to this notion, it seriously affected the sensibilities of certain religious groups. I suppose one man's food of the Gods is another's blasphemy.Perhaps this could be an emerging theme? If so, we can't wait for Cavallaro's Bacon Chief Rabbi.

<itunes:summary>Somebody somewhere once said, "Truth is Stranger than Fiction.” In actual fact, it’s probably one of those quotes that no one ever actually said but that everyone simply accepts. Like, “Beam me up Scotty;” these words were never actually uttered by the good Captain James T. Kirk, apparently, yet ask anyone in the street and they’ll guarantee you’re wrong. They’ll lay money on it. Or they’ll simply shrug and walk away, checking anxiously behind them to see if you’re following. So is it? Stranger than fiction. Well, we at Defunktion think not. Fiction, we would argue can be pretty damn strange. Take the work of decidedly lunatic Frenchman Georges Perec for example. For those unfamiliar with his madness, his novel A Void consists of a wildly creative narrative written in French without ever once using the letter “e.” This is a completely normal novel in every other sense, it has a story, and a good one at that. It has characters and events and everything else you’d expect. Just no “e’s.” Quite strange n'est-ce pas?So what of truth? How strange is truth in general? Well, not very. It’s true, for example, that the harder you kick a can of coke, the further it will travel. Yet, that’s not particularly strange. It’s also true that sewage systems are boring. Except that they aren't. Drainage systems are staggeringly beautiful and interesting things. A bold claim, but one that we at Defunktion are ready to make, now that we’ve seen the G-Cans Project.Whomever is responsible for this subterranean-tour-de-force has a very fine eye for composition, coupled with a subtlety of touch probably not encountered that often in the humdrum world of water drainage. These sci-fi worlds seem to have been plucked straight out of Blade Runner; perfectly illustrating that photography can be at once ordinary and sublime. The subterranean spaces are lovingly shot, the light in each exquisitely revealing detail where required and throwing masks of darkness across to intensify drama. This is photography that makes us look again at the ordinary, that makes us approach and question the aesthetic of the world around us in entirely different ways. So what’s the stranger? The world as it truthfully is, or the world as we imagine it to be? Well surely they’re both the same thing after all...The G-Cans Project can be , or, for more adventurous readers in Tokyo, there are free live tours available (note that one of your tour group must be able to speak Japanese).

<itunes:summary>On some other bit of the Internet, far away, IdN are holding a competition in aid of their 15th anniversary. Feel free to pop over to their site to familiarise yourself with what's going on, then make sure to head back here and finish reading this.
Scarfs are particularly special items of clothing. More imposing than a tie - a real scarf can serve both a utlitarian purpose and achieve something special in terms of the aesthetic: they can keep you warm and they can look damn good.
B2D4 aka Bits To Die For, have almost achieved scarf zen with their range of pixel-perfect 8-bit inspired scarfs. Their initial selection presents five different designs in an array of coin-op monochrome-esque colours. It's always pleasing to see the juxtaposition of digital-culture and craft creations and, in the case of B2D4 especially, there's something particularly satisfying about chunky retro-aliens appearing on such traditional pieces of knitted apparel.
More limited-edition items such as pins, gloves, bags and cushions are all available to those wiling to do a little bit of online hunting. And we'll certainly be seeing more of these fusion pieces too - handmade community Etsy are embracing this type of craft and as a result there's an enthusiastic sub-culture emerging of artists and designers merging retro-tech influences with handmade creations.

<itunes:summary>Two years ago, now defunct Live-Shot.com - a Texas-based hunting company - began offering paying visitors the opportunity to shoot (and kill) real deer online. Live-Shot eventually closed its doors, but not before diversifying the business model - the original company's legacy now remains in the form of Live-Paintball.com: pay some money and shoot live people with a paintball gun controlled via the Internet. The opportunity to experience this form of remote violence, either via direct interaction or just observing others, is enticing. We have an opportunity not only to gratify and indulge through control and affect, but to examine and explore ourselves. The problem, aside from the shooting and killing of actual animals, is that Live-Shot commoditised the experience, removing the opportunity for a certain kind of introspection - a cultural analysis free from the notion of something so utterly distasteful as killing and maiming.Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal, now based in Chicago, certainly won't be free from criticism either, despite creating an installation that explores the concepts of control and interaction, via remote shooting, in a completely different context. Bilal has set himself up as the centre of an installation in which he lives in a single room under the gaze of a user-controlled webcam and paintball rifle. The work, entitled Domestic Tension, has Bilal living 24-hours-a-day for a month in one space, constantly connected to his audience, who can observe, chat or just shoot at him through the installation's website. Some 40,000 rounds were fired in the first two-and-a-half weeks of the work, and the project has already drawn the attention of a group of hackers who managed to fire the gun 20,000 times in 24 hours. Unsurprisingly, almost everything in Bilal's living quarters is now covered in the yellow paint of the gun.The level of audience interaction means that the online participants are as much the subject of the work as the reactions of the artist. His fate relies on these observers, be they understanding, unsympathetic or simply idiotic. In addition to the ever-present threat of the paintballs, Bilal only eats food donated by strangers, which has produced an audience reaction at the opposing end of the scale: people have donated food, items, and have even taken turns at firing the gun away from him so as to deprive those who wish to target the artist himself.Bilal probably did not predict his own reactions to the varied forms of audience participation, and is clearly shaken and touched by his experiences. He shares his thoughts on a daily Youtube video blog, which will continue until the end of the installation on June 4. Although you may have your own idea of how you'll approach interaction with Bilal, the interesting part occurs when you're at the controls - faced with this man and this gun. Visit now as there are only a few days left to find out how you'll behave on Domestic Tension.

<itunes:summary>The weather over in the UK is picking up so there's a few things that need to be done: take scissor to denim and create new Summer shorts from old jeans; go on art gallery crawls with vodka and mixer surreptitiously blended in a mineral water bottle and do both of these things with head-phones on listening to sunny-sounding mixes . It's like the Manchester equivalent of a reverse-tribal-rain-dance - folk out here occasionally ditch The Smiths and listen to optimistic music instead in the hope that the rain will stop and the sun will come out for a few minutes.First up, Jesse over at Humili posted a mix entitled Fuck Art Let's Dance. Good sentiment and great tunes, in particular Hot Chip's laid-back promises in Over and Over never seem to get old:[audio:http://www.humili.com/music/FUCK ART LETS DANCE.mp3]Friend of EndTopic's DisecoPodcast, Kikellamas, serves up a steaming hot cup of guitars, with a side-portion of beats, in mix form. After an introduction from sultry squeaky-voiced duo CocoRosie, there are cuts from Elliot Smith, Cat Power, Kings of Convenience and, amongst other mellow gems, Peter, Bjorn and John's whistle-a-long classic Young Folks:[audio:http://www.endtopic.com/podcast/kllpodcastfeb07.mp3]Our final choice is Avant-Avant's La jeunesse mix by Jr. Tricolore de Numéro - it gets to the point almost immediately, this is marching music, building to a solid electro-ridden, four-on-the-floor groove within the first few minutes. Expect Hugg Pep, Xiu Xiu, and Audion, climaxing somewhat unexpectedly (yet not inappropriately) with Severed Heads:[audio:http://avant-avant.net/podcast/avant-avant_009.mp3]

<itunes:summary>Defunktion have been enjoying Tom Muller's work for several years now. Originally coming to our attention back in 2002 with the impressive ximeraLabs and his work at London design agency Kleber, over the past five years he's worked on a range of exciting projects and, most notably, joined forces with Mam Tor™ - an independent comic-book publisher which has garnered attention for teaming up great artists and writers to tell beautifully rendered and utterly fascinating original stories.Click the Continue Reading link to read about Muller collaborating with acclaimed comic-book artist Ashley Wood, Kleber working from a virtual office and more.

Q: We last spoke back in 2005, you were were working on a short sci-fi story to be featured in the first Mam Tor™ title - Event Horizon. How have things progressed since then?
A:Seems so long ago! Well I've been up to the usual things - designing lots of stuff. I moved to an enormous 2 floor apartment, got engaged, worked on more design, became part of Mam Tor™ Publishing and now I'm trying to find some time to work on a new personal project. Things are very good!Q:What's your involvement with Mam Tor™ these days?
A:I got involved with Mam Tor™ late 2004. It's a UK-based comic/book publisher started by Liam Sharp, a very prominent English comic artist/writer in the business (he's drawn everything from X-Men to Judge Dredd).Liam felt that there was a hole in the market that didn't cater to material that's not mainstream. You could say the big inspiration behind the company is the classic French magazine Métal Hurlant (Heavy Metal); that period in comics where there was a rush of left-field, experimental stories that you don't see anymore nowadays. My involvement with Mam Tor™ is the overall art-direction and design of the company. I decide/design anything from the logo, overall identity, book and cover design... you name it.Q:You're also on the Kleber team - they've worked on projects for Warp Records, Ninja Tune and Partizan, amongst others. How has it been over there?
A:Quite busy. In the past two years we've seen an influx of jobs. We continue to do what we're known for - the music related work - but we've also done some big projects for Sony Electronics, The ICA, and other non-music stuff. We've also been very active for Sony BMG Records here in the UK, designing a lot of their label and sub-label sites, artist sites etc. And we've managed to stay at the same size as we were which is a good thing I think.Another interesting thing is that since 2005, possibly a little earlier, we've become what you might call a "virtual studio". We decentralised the company, we don't have a physical office anymore - we work locally from our own areas yet still within a company structure. It seemed a risky move at the beginning but has actually worked for the best - we're closer to our clients this way, and are able to cover a lot of ground.2007 is shaping up to be another busy year. Some very interesting projects in development and on the horizon.
Q:As always you're incredibly busy, what's your main project at the moment?
After having designed the graphic novel Worry Doll for Mam Tor, Liz (my fiancée) and I are designing another novel for them - it should be out in a month or two. I did the publication design for comics anthology 24SEVEN for Image comics, and Liz and I did branding and identity work for fashion duo Felder Felder, plus I did an animation piece for The Colour Rooms - a concept space by Sony Bravia.I'm also working with Liz on the branding for a new furniture company. And at Kleber I’m working on some projects that I can’t talk about - one is arts related, the others are music related. All of the work is on my site - HelloMuller.com.Q:With so much on the horizon for you, what are you most excited about getting started on?
A:I'm going to collaborate with Ashley Wood on a poster project for Wear It With Pride and I'm doing a 48 page design/illustration book for a new series cur</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Norway's Erlend Øye has made some very special things with some very special people: conspired with Eirik Glambek Bøe to release two utterly accomplished Kings of Convenience albums (plus a KoC remix LP too), collaborated with a range of established electronic-producers on a solo album (Unrest) and created his own DJ Kicks.Øye's latest sonic venture is Berlin-based band, Whitest Boy Alive. With a stripped-down sound and constant Disco-infused grooves, Øye's given the opportunity to strut a little more - although they've moved away from the feyness of Kings of Convenience, Whitest Boy Alive retain the heart-felt nature of Øye's previous projects.Entirely illustrated by LA-based Geoff McFetridge (amongst other things, he previously worked on the title-sequence for The Virgin Suicides), check out the promo for their latest single, Golden Cage. With it's stark yet silly style and selection of spiky-toothed monsters, this line-drawn piece threatens to become a firm favourite.

<itunes:summary>It's de rigeur now to be not only to interact with art, but to play a part in making our art. is no longer something reserved for Happenings or circa 90's New Media interactive installations, it's something that has crossed over into a more accessible state, helped a great deal by the Internet. Point being, as observers and practitioners of creative content, we're taking a giant leap forward right now: the user is God and content is king. What to contribute to though? What to create? What is of value any more?Previously featured on Defunktion, Frank Warren's Post Secret made its mark, not because anybody could contribute, regardless of artistic ability, but because the messages featured manage to touch a nerve, consistently. Spend 10 minutes at the Post Secret site and you'll be reminded how fragile we really are, how twisted we get over the most trivial things, how sometimes we do the most awful things to ourselves and each other and how some of us are strong enough to spit in the eyes of horror and stamp on the toes of tragedy. Essentially, it's comforting to know there's people out there that are just as fucked up as ourselves.Taking it's cue from the Post Secret medium is MAiLmeART.com. Created by Darren Di Lieto, founder and editor of illustration portal LCSV4, the concept is short and sweet: send some mail to Di Lieto and use the envelope or package itself as the canvas:"Submissions can be envelopes or packages which have been drawn on, painted , dipped in acid, covered in paper mache (anything you want really) but they must look amazing and they must have travelled though the post with the postman able to see the work."

With slightly edgier edges comes Trent Reznor's latest Nine Inch Nails album. While NiN certainly may not be to everyone's taste, one still has to acknowledge that Reznor is instigating some very interesting stuff. Most recently he has released several tracks from the latest NiN long-player in GarageBand format, distributing them via the Internet, for free. For those with a Macbook and a penchant for industrial rock, we're sure that remixing Rezner's latest release will be a distinct pleasure. For the rest of us, we'll stick to posting our dirty secrets to Frank Warren.

<itunes:summary>Andrew Huang's techno-sentimental visualisation of one robot's human aspirations, Doll Face, in spite of its short length, is somewhat touching - the interplay between live-acting and digital production drawing focus to the fembot's (virtual) dilemma.Drawing clear inspiration from Chris Cunningham's promo for Bjork's All is Full of Love, it touches on this notion of pseudo-human/cyborg sensuality but perhaps crosses the boundary into bolder territory. There's an undercurrent of post-feminist commentary, as the Gynoid learns and rapidly becomes emotional, as overt as this is, it's not clear if this was Huang's intention.Moving on from speculating, Huang's production work is impressive - having written the story, filmed it and even scored the Plaid-esque sound-track. It brings to mind Defunktion-favourites Pleix too, with the cyberpunk-influenced theme and use of 3D production techniques. After watching Doll Face, we recommend (re)visiting Pleix's E-Baby piece.

<itunes:summary>[audio:http://www.defunktion.net/media/podcasts/Miranda_July_-_Defunktion_Podcast_Series.mp3]Miranda July is a performance artist, film-maker, recording artist (releasing on Kill Rock Stars) and writer. Her creations carry a sort of naïve wonder that could come only from an observer with a uniquely keen eye for the peculiar relationships and situations people find themselves in. And July communicates these situations perfectly, as if the audience is living every moment, adopting her characters' sensibilities, in on the joke, aware but just as surprised, confused, enamoured or disenchanted.July's first feature-length film, Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005), is 90 minutes of intimacy, joy, woe, wonder and awkwardness. Quite rightly it won a panoply of awards including several from Cannes and Sundance. In this episode of Defunktion's Podcast Series, MJ Hyland (out of her author role and, for a moment, playing the part of interview and fan) notes that the film leaves the audience with a smile on their face and feeling happy. July captures the essence of the simple things around us and makes them wonderful and, perhaps, that's what makes her work such a pleasure: that suddenly every interaction and observation can be something utterly special, a moment to savour in of itself. In June 2007, on the eve of the publication of her first collection of short stories, entitled No One Belongs Here More Than You, MJ Hyland joined July at London's Serpentine Gallery to discuss life after her first movie, artistic practices, quotidian routine and to read an excerpt from the forthcoming book.Click the play button above to listen to the entire session right now on Defunktion, or read the Podcast guide below to find out more about other methods for listening to the Defunktion Podcast Series.Miranda July's first collection of short stories is published by Canongate in the UK. <itunes:summary>Hailing from Buenos Aires, Gastón Caba is an illustrator with a decidedly surreal and colourful bent. A quick visit to his website, gastoncaba.com.ar, confirms this, as his creations positively gush with inane and adorable character and would be just as comfortable representing in a kids cartoon as on the bottom of a skateboard.Caba doesn't just illustrate though, he confidently produces work in a variety of mediums. Working together with Nicolás Cohen under the collective pseudonym of Flavia The Motonets, Caba creates tremendously mellow music - perfect lullabies for grown-ups. The fictional band's second set of recordings La Pelicula de Flavia, originally released on Defunktion back in 2005, is available now over at www.flaviamotonet.com.ar.In another corner of the Internet one can also find a selection of hand-drawn illustrations focused solely on mobile phones. Particularly salient is the image of a smiling man stranded in the middle of the ocean, phone clutched to his ear, the caption simply reading, "I'm quite busy now." Is Caba trying to tell us something? Possibly.  With such a diverse range of talents, he'll be quite busy for some time.Visit the Gastón Caba Defunktion Exhibition now.

<itunes:summary>It's a special moment, the steady dawn of realisation that surreptitiously crawls on all fours across your cognitive landscape, it results in the acknowledgement of two key things: (1) Makibishi Comic is really quite strange and wonderful, and (2) you've got to keep playing because this is the first time you've observed a giant nappy-wearing baby with a Yakuza-style tattoo across its back, wearing a gas-mask that pumps a fresh jungle beat into its head and expelling little men from its rectum.
The studio behind this compelling and comical creation is Makibishi Inc., based over in Tokyo, they seem to be somewhat of an alternative to the usual design agency - dealing in alternative approaches, odd ideas and new aesthetic thinking. Their own site seems to be almost Dadaist in its relationship to the visitor - it's counter-intuitive, there's hardly any information on the actual agency, the styling is garish, the scrolling painful. It's like the last ten years of web-design puked its guts out over a decade of digital culture.
But it absolutely works. It really does. The main site will intrigue, coaxing you into unearthing elusive factual data by sifting through the trivial top-soil strewn around. And if that doesn't convince, then their flash-game will - with its gigantic baby, nonsensical plot, cute characterisation, insane animal warfare and cryptic characterisation. Makibishi Inc. are smart creative people, visual composers - they adore their medium and have mashed up everything they love into an approach that results in creations that are referential, unique and fun.

<itunes:summary>So the skeletal remains of cartoon characters have already been covered (or possible uncovered) on Defunktion. Even Da Vinci-esque anatomical diagrams have featured. Whilst the notion of seeing pop-culture icons literally skinned to the bone may now be a little passé, surely you would like to see the structure that lay beneath Pac Man's bright yellow sheen? Artist, Le Gentil Garçon, has created just such an object; on view alongside a retrospective of his mixed media and multi-practice work dating back to '99.Le Gentil Garçon's works verge into the existential whilst remaining curious on an immediately accessible level; weaving in humour and playful interaction as a commentary to greater issues, such as society, behaviour, life and death.  Big things indeed, but executed in less bombastic, but still impactive, ways.See All the Love (2006), a chart detailing all the possible combinations of initials for the names of couples in love: visualising that which seemed mysterious and reducing it to mere maths thusly trivialising emotional matters, or perhaps providing a blue-print for the genuinely connected nature of the individual, the couple and the mass - the similarity of all.The artist's 2004 Pac-man piece involved him enlisting the help of a palaeontologist to render the pill-gobling icon as realistically as possible.  Le Gentil Garçon is an artist with a passion for detail, unafraid to let the secrets held within his pieces leak out only upon close examination.  Whilst his website won't allow you to utterly engage with the pieces - the images are too small and nothing beats actually standing in a room with one of his sculptures - it'll make a perfect starting point for you to begin your inspection of this nice boy's work.

<itunes:summary>Continuing what seems to be an emerging theme of featuring design agencies who specialise in creating fantastical worlds filled with anthropomorphic inhabitants, we spoke to French creative-team Kanardo about their favourite colours, creating clothes and collaborating with Unchi Leisure Centre. Specialising in unconventional design projects and based in Lyon, France, Adrien Dufond caught up with Kanardo-founder François Verdet for an introduction to the agency.  Q:Why call yourself Kanardo?A:It's a question we get asked quite often. Unfortunately we've forgotten where the name actually comes from!Q:What are the fundamentals of the Kanardo style?A:Simple and coloured. We do have a favourite palette where the main colours would be C20M0Y0K0, C0M23Y0K0, C30M0Y98K0, C0M55Y98K0 and some light grey.

Q:Does your artwork reflect your personality?A:Undoubtedly. I think that what we create represents the fact that we are autodidacts and immensely curious. Each project is a fresh challenge for us - an opportunity to test out new techniques and to learn even more. If you look at our portfolio you'll find we take a multi-disciplinary approach - there are photographic pieces alongside vector briefs.Q:Can you explain more about The Unchi Leisure Center?A:Initiated in 2003 by Superdeux, the Unchi Leisure Center promotes and supports individual and collective projects through all sorts of cultural events, exhibitions and parties. Based in France, yet incorporating a range of international collaborators, Unchi Leisure Center develops various brands all over the world. They've already announced a selection of projects for 2007 - the Let's get ill parties, exclusive designs for XBOX 360, apparel in association with Air Plane System and two exhibitions: Say What - Part 2 and Pop'n'Flop'n'Toys in collaboration with Kid Robot.
Q:What are your future plans?A:To relocate! We're thinking of moving closer to the ocean - near Biarritz, the South-west of France, at the end of spring! Ah ah! We do have a few design projects organised too, we're designing a range of caps for a German brand, preparing some new illustrations for various books, and planning a solo exhibition this June in Lyon, some tees, an interface for an online flash game and also a toy in association with Red Magic (planned for release in 2008).To see more of the Kanardo universe:

<itunes:summary>Created for Bisazza by designer James Hayon, Pixel Ballet (pictured) has been one of this year's hits at the Salone. Based in Venice, Bisazza have a stable of designers working exclusively in mosaic, producing lush traditional Mediterranean-style works to understated contemporary pieces and everything in between.
Hayon's main piece, Pinocchione, is really big. It's as though a giant Qee has decided to settle down in the middle of a furniture exhibition. In fact, that's not far from the truth, aside from designing various furniture collections - storage units, vases, tables and lamps - Hayon has also painted in a Picasso-inspired style on a range of Qees. Unlike the pocket-size Qees, this impressive piece at Salone has serious presence, owning the space it inhabits as it straddles the sparkling mosaic-adorned fence between kitsch and pixel-chic.
Elsewhere at Salone, demonstrating the changing climate with regard to eco-awareness, is DIY Kyoto's Wattson. In the past 12 months, taking responsibility for our environmental impact has become a fashionable priority. That's fine of course. We should indeed give a damn about the world we live in. So designers Greta Corke, Jon Sawdon Smith and Richard Woods, have created a device that manages to measure the amount of electricity being used in the home at a given moment.
Their brilliant little box dynamically and visually quantifies energy usage. It sounds quite dull, but in practice Wattson does its job whilst looking like a pseudo-futuristic objet d'art; transmogrifying the power we use into numbers and colours, and driving home the immediate impact of our energy use on both our pockets and the world around us.

<itunes:summary>This interview was originally published in May 2004 on Defunktion.net:
Founder of Japanese game (and sound toy) development house NanaOn-Sha, Matsuura-san is responsible for creating several games which blend music with rhythm-based play; his latest title, Vib Ripple, utilises the Sony Playstation 2 coupled with a digital camera, generating unique playable levels based upon real-world photographs taken by the user. If ever there was a game for designers, this may be it.
"I have no point of reference for how a dog should sing..."

Q:When and why did you begin creating?
A:I started my career as a musician. I was signed to Sony from 1983 - 1993, making music on my computer and working with a singer, Chaka. I released 10 albums in all, under the name PSY-S (pronounced 'size'). I guess the music sounded a little like Yazoo or Depeche Mode. Eventually I began to think about interactivity. My first experiments didn't work, I had decided I wanted to attempt to express good and bad together. My focus shifted to exploring interactive music creation.
Q:What was the first commercial project you worked on?
A:Before PaRappa the Rapper, I created several digital music toys - The Seven Colours, TOOL-X and Tunin' Glue ().

Q:What are you currently working on?
A:I've just finished Vib-Ripple; I'm working on the latest Sony Aibo ERS-7 - creating the sound for it. I was surprised to think about who, or what, the music player is. I've never understood what a robot is, Aibo is both a dog and a robot - I have no point of reference for how a dog should sing. This project is post-virtual reality, post-digital-creation; after this I will continue to work on pieces for real environments.
Q:What has been your favourite project so far?
A:This is a very tough question. I really love PaRappa, but some other projects are much closer to me. i think the most important thing is the character; sometimes I love them and sometimes I hate them.
Q:When you aren't creating, what are you doing?
A:I love playing with my dogs! I have a rubber dog and a real dog and I like to play with them.

Q:Where does your inspiration come from?
A:I take my inspiration from the smallest of things. I have a friend, a really smart guy, but when he talks he makes akward hand movements. Very repetitive, almost obssessive! Maybe he's not aware that he's doing it, but I realise it helps him express himself. Looking at these movements, these strange and important things, plants the seed and the idea begins to grow.
Q:Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A:Sometimes I feel that no-one wants me to make a new game or toy. Going to events such as GDC, meeting the people and feeling the atmosphere changes my mind though - it encourages me to continue creating. In ten years I'll be over fifty! My friends will have retired. But I'm a creator, and will be until I die.
Q:If you hadn't become a game-designer/toy-maker/musician, what would you be doing?
A:A sushi chef! Or creating strange embroidery!
Q:What are you going to do, when you finish answering these questions?
A:I'm going to go play with my dogs!

<itunes:summary>To celebrate Andreas Pihlström's new Defunktion exhibition (click here to visit the gallery), Defunktion's French correspondant, Adrien Dufond, put a quick call in to the Swedish designer who's not afraid to go back to basics with his design methodology.Q:For our readers who may not be familiar with your work and the projects you're involved with, bring us up to speed and tell us a little about yourself.
A:As you might have figured out already, my name is Andreas Pihlström. I was born and raised in a suburb of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.I've been into all kinds of art since I was a little kid. Graffiti was something I lived for until I got caught (for the 2nd time). Graffiti and tags have always fascinated me - I'm still putting pen to paper everyday at work.
Q:How did your collaboration with the French guys over at NTMY come about?
A:Just a coincidence. I started Nice To Meet You back in January this year. Two weeks after launch, Dave, from Hellohikimori / French N' Fresh, e-mailed and asked me to collaborate with him. After writing back and forth for a while, we decided to merge F'N'F and NTMY and keep the name Nice To Meet You. The results have been great.

Q:How important is space and place to design? Do NTMY have a completely different take on things than you do, as an individual?
A:The big difference is colors. Swedish people are kinda shy when it comes to colors I think.Q:Do you think where you grew up played an important role in forming your approach to design?
A:Absolutely. Sweden has been a great place for me to become what I am today.Q:What's next on your project list?
A:Here goes...

Be a great dad.
Take care of my lovely girlfriend.
Decorate our new apartment.
Study grids, geometry shapes and typography.

<itunes:summary>Defunktion presents an exhibition from Emma Ferguson, a British artist specialising in embroidery.  Kick your pre-conceptions to the gutter as Ferguson entangles notions of this traditional practice with technology fetishism creating stunning and unexpected imagery.
Click here to visit the Defunktion exhibition now, or view the full article to find out more about Emma Ferguson's background and creative approach.

Emma Ferguson's original aim was to become a Graphic Designer - she enrolled on a course and began pursuing her chosen career with passion, developing an eye for detail and a love of the intricate. Somewhere along the way though, Ferguson became enamoured with one particular practice not usually associated with Graphic Design,
“With each new project I was given, the outcomes became more tactile - it was at this time that I first picked up a sewing machine. Though it wasn’t until my final year of university that I really learnt the traditonal embroidery methods. I became more of a craftsman, making sure I knew names of stitches and the importance of embroidery as a social and cultural artistic practice.”
Ferguson was rallying against everything that popular contemporary Graphic Design seemed to stand for, “The work I produced was very much a reaction against computer generated imagery appearing all around me on club flyers, magazines and design books.” She created a series of pieces that celebrated
The pieces on show in this Defunktion exhibition continue with Ferguson's emerging cultural narrative, juxtaposing high-technology with traditional craft practice, imbuing the objects she renders with an alternative tangibility and unexpected resonance.
“Technology is something that's considered quite masculine, giving it a feminine touch pulls the two opposites together. I wanted to take things not considered pretty and transform them in to lovingly crafted items.”

Emma Ferguson can be found every Sunday with a stall on London's Brick Lane Upmarket. Ferguson is also featured in a forthcoming book to be published by Die Gestalten Verlag. The artist's work can be seen in a forthcoming exhibition from Castor Pollux in Brighton and a poster project for Three for Free to be launched soon.
